This model includes a clear methacrylate display stand with a black engraved base featuring the aircraft’s specifications, along with a historical booklet dedicated to the Spitfire EN398 and its pilot, Johnnie Johnson.

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk IXc EN398 is one of the most recognizable Allied fighters of the 1942–1945 period. Closely associated with Wing Commander James Edgar “Johnnie” Johnson , it occupies a significant place in the history of military aviation. With this 1/24 scale Supermarine Spitfire aircraft model kit , you can accurately recreate a real World War II aircraft documented in operational service. The kit is designed for modelers seeking historical accuracy, structural detail and a faithful representation of one of the most iconic fighters of its era.

Features of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IXc EN398 Model

This model is designed for builders who want an accurate representation of a real World War II aircraft, combining a solid structure with well-documented historical details.

Materials and structure

The kit uses carefully selected materials to reproduce the look and feel of the real Spitfire:

• Wooden structure for fuselage and wings, providing strength and stable assembly.
• Aluminium plating replicating the original metal skin of the Mk IXc.
• Zamak (die-cast metal) parts for components requiring rigidity and definition.
• Decorative vinyls for historically accurate markings and graphic details of the EN398.

This combination results in a robust model with a realistic finish, ideal for painting, weathering and advanced detailing techniques.

Technical specifications

• Reference: 2WW01
• Scale: 1/24
• Length: 381 mm
• Wingspan: 467 mm
• Height: 113 mm

The 1/24 scale allows you to appreciate aerodynamic profiles, panel lines and control surfaces with clarity, without requiring excessive display space.

Colours, markings and serial

The model reproduces the markings and camouflage scheme of the Spitfire EN398 following RAF guidelines from 1943:

• Day Fighter Scheme camouflage: Ocean Grey and Dark Green on upper surfaces, Medium Sea Grey on lower surfaces.
• Sky-coloured spinner and rear fuselage band.
• “JE-J” codes used by Johnnie Johnson as Wing Commander of the Canadian Wing.
• Type B roundels (upper wings), Type C (lower wings) and Type C1 (fuselage).
• Red-white-blue fin flash.
• Serial number “EN398” on the rear fuselage.
• Canadian maple leaf emblem, representative of the Canadian Wing.

These elements allow the modeler to build a specific, historically documented aircraft rather than a generic Spitfire variant.

History of the Spitfire EN398: the Aircraft of Canadian Ace Johnnie Johnson

The Spitfire Mk IXc was introduced to counter the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, featuring the Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 engine, which offered improved high-altitude performance and speeds exceeding 650 km/h. Its “C-wing” configuration provided a balanced combination of firepower and manoeuvrability, making it one of the RAF’s most effective fighters during World War II.

The EN398 is best known as the primary aircraft flown by James Edgar “Johnnie” Johnson, the RAF’s top-scoring fighter ace with 38 confirmed victories. In 1943, Johnson flew this aircraft as Wing Commander of the Canadian Wing based at Kenley, using it for escort missions, offensive sweeps and operations over occupied France.

Its JE-J codes, C-wing configuration and extensive photographic documentation make EN398 one of the most studied and accurately reproduced Spitfires in historical aviation modelling.

Why Choose This Spitfire Mk IXc Model for Your Collection

1. Faithful reproduction of a real, well-documented aircraft. EN398 is one of the best-recorded Spitfires in wartime archives and photographs, allowing a historically accurate build with verified markings and proportions.

2. 1/24 scale: high detail without taking up excessive space. Its final size (381 mm long) offers an excellent surface for painting, weathering and panel detailing while remaining compact for display.

3. Quality materials and a stable construction. The combination of a wooden structure, aluminium plating, zamak components and vinyl markings provides a solid base and a precise, durable finish suitable for both developing and advanced modelers.
